Woke up and got breakfast this morning. It was huge! Didn’t realize it was gonna be that big. I ate most of it. As I was going to work I ate the rest of my breakfast which was a cup of strawberries. Had a fairly slow morning at work today. Had my protein bar at 10:30. Had my chef salad for lunch and then my cashews for my afternoon snack. Finished out my day waiting for a set of brakes that they kept telling me were in the building. 4 hours later after the runners went to the other dealerships twice I finally got my brakes. Picked up my dog from the groomers on the way home. Got home and ate dinner. It was pork chops, asperagus, and brown rice. Did you know asperagus makes your pee stink to the point of almost gagging?
Waited a little over an hour and then got things set up for P90X. Beginning seemed to be okay as I paced myself. Doing between 10-15 reps a piece doing the cleanest form I could get. But a little over half way when the program switches up and does everything in reverse that’s when I started to feel the burn. I had to do my push ups modified. Dranks lots of water during the workout, actually had to fill up the bottle a few times. Completed chest and back and then did ab ripper x. I had a bit of a hard time with heels to the heavens. Just couldn’t seem to lift off the ground without having to use my hands for assistance because it was hurting. But I did all the other ones as strong and as clean as I could. I definately had to use the breaks they tell ya to take. Finished it off and drank a recovery drink……I highly reccommend it!!! So that’s it for day 1 and all in all I noticed when I took my shower that my arms were having a hard time just scrubbing my hair cause they were still burning. Now I’m relaxing and going to bed. Later on.

Good job with the posts. I read all 3 and they are just letting me know what to expect next week when I start the program. Thanks for the heads up on the pain. And by the way, I know what you mean about the ASPARAGUS PEE smell. At first I could not handle it either.. but I eat asparagus a lot and have grown accustomed to it. I can tolerate it now, but that does not mean that I do not like it!!
**JK**
glad you started this website, great idea. I get my p90x tomorrow..can’t wait to start the program
BRO! YOUR SITE KICKS ASS! REALLY INSIGHTFUL AND INSPIRING! BRING IT!!
Thanks man!!!!!!!!
Hi Tom,
Your website is coming in handy since our instructional video is scratched badly enough it won’t play and I want to start the program tomorrow. My husband really wanted to have all the info before starting the program. I said I am just going to follow the workouts you have done and that is enough info for me. Is there a lot of variation among the workouts that will give you different results? If you have a chance to reply that would be great. Thanks and keep up the good work. Your website is my instruction manual.
Michelle
Hi Michelle,
Glad my blog is helping you and your husband out. There is quite a bit of variation in the workouts. Big difference between say Plyometrics which is more cardio based and say Chest & Back which is more about resistance and weights. Kenpo X is my favorite. That workout uses karate style moves as the base of the workout. P90X is always mixing things up that is one of the reasons I bought the program. Let me know if I can help you guys out with any other questions.
Good job with the postings.
I just started this program last night. I am glad you are posting this stuff because I want to follow along to see if I am experiencing the same things you are. Up to now I am totally the same. I was good through the first half and overwhelmed the second half. With 10 mins left in the workout I started to feel nauseous but recovered and finished the video. Ab ripperx killed me. It was so hard after that work out, my muscles didn’t want to do anymore. Can’t wait for tonight when I am on to disk two.
CAN I HAVE COFFEE ON THIS DIET!!!!!
Paul, yeah first day, if you’re not used to this stuff you feel like you’re going to throw up! One thing that’s sort of cheating, you don’t see the same guys in Chest & Back video doing Ab Ripper afterwards, they get off the hook! We have to BRING IT for another 15 min of torture in Ab Ripper.
Carl…Yes you can drink coffee. But don’t add all that sugar and heavy cream. Drink it BLACK buddy!
I am so glad that I found your site! To see all the change that has happened while on this program has convinced me to buy it. Do you need anything special? Like weights, or pull up bars? Do they show you how to get the same effect if you don’t have those things? Thank you for answering my questions!
Hey Courtney,
Glad to hear that we have motivated you to get going with P90X!!! You will need to get some gear. The P90X Chin Up Bar is really the best way to go, but my door frames aren’t built to handle it so we use the upgrade kit with the door attachment together with the resistance bands. It basically allows you to do the same overhead moves, and these modifications are shown on the videos.
You’ll also want to grab some yoga blocks for Yoga X for support as you may not be as flexible yet, as well as a yoga mat. I like to use the Pushup stands also for more range of motion, but you’ll have to make that decision for yourself.
You can use your own free weights or you can go with the P90X resistance bands like we use. And last but not least P90X Recovery Drink!!! You can check out all this stuff and the other gear they offer all on this page:

Oh wow, haha cool thank you so much! I can’t wait to get started with this!

1st night, 207 lbs, tired of being fat at the pool. Embarass scuba diving with friends. So p90x. 1st day was today. I ate a half of sub from subway at 12, the other half at 3 with some noodles also. 3 32 ounce of water through the day. Im a car salesmen. All we do is eat. This is hard. I get home to do the workout after i bought new weights, a pull up bar, and this video. I suck. I couldnt do 1 pull up. After the 3rd different set up push ups i started just to fall on the ground. My arms just colapse with exhaustion. Then i tried the abs workout. That was a joke. I can barley do sit ups let along that stuff. I did the best I can. I know tommorow wont be easier, but i will give it all i can. I cant quit!
Joshua,
You can do this man!!!!! As Tony always says, do your best and FORGET THE REST. When I was first doing this I had to stop halfway through Chest & Back and start doing the pushups on my knees. Do WHATEVER you have to do to hang in there and make it happen. Don’t quit. If you have to hit pause, HIT PAUSE. Catch your breath and finish the workout.
Set aside enough time so that if you have to extend it past the normal hour you can. The worst thing to do is to turn off that DVD player before the end. That will bring down your motivation greatly.
Just keep working at it, modify the moves to keep going in the workout. Use a chair for the chin up routines it’s not a crime.
This is just the beginning. If you stick with this for 90 days you’re going to be so thankful you did. Check back with me and let me know how you’re doing!
Hey Tom,
I was thinking of buying this workout, but just didn’t know if it was right for me. I’m a junior in high school, weigh 115 lbs, and am 5′8”. I don’t know if I’m too young or too thin to do it? I really just want to get in better shape, build more muscle, and build my stamina for cross country next year so I can better than I was this year. Will it really work or make a difference in me?
Ben, I don’t think there is any age minimum for P90X, as long as you have the dedication I don’t think this program would be problem for you. I think you should definitely talk it over with your parents and probably stay away from the supplements unless it’s ok with them.
You’d be an animal out there if you had P90X under your belt!!! Builds a ton of stamina and Plyometrics would really help with the running. Take a look at the program I bought everything I need from extremebodyworkout.com, just make sure you talk this over with your parents and get their approval first. Good luck dude and kick some ass with the cross country!!!!

Hello! My husband and I bought the set last September, 1 month after I gave birth to our first child. Prior to pregancy I was a runner, and lifter 3 days a week. Pretty good shape! Gained 55 lbs pregnant-ate well needless to say. My Husband and I thought it would be ideal being home for me to do…well he did it! Had great results-and is back PowerLifting. I have 27lbs left from pregnancy, am back working, and have been thinking about those DVD’s for months. So I start day 1 today-hoping this 90 day committment gives me back my drive…..I will keep you posted-any other women out there?? What day are you on??
Hey Cathy,
Way to get back into it! P90X is incredible and of course I highly recommend it! Yes there are other women doing the program. My wife for starters. She is just getting going with her 90 days and she will be tracking her daily progress over at
http://www.90dayleanreview.com/
Good luck with the program!
Tom, love the site man. One question, when you started, what kind of weights were you using. In the video, it looks like you had 5 and 10 pound weights. I am starting next week when my package arrives, and I am getting all my gear ready.
Thanks dude
Tom, My husband has lost 80 lbs over the past year and is now down to 185 or so, but he is still looking to loose more weight and gain muscle. His birthday is this month and I was thinking about getting this for him for his birthday. Does this program advise him on what he should be eatting as well as doing, and do we need a lot of exercise equipment here at home for him to do the exercises? Do you think this program would fit his needs? Thank you for your time.
H Susan,
Sounds like your husband is doing really well so far. P90X has completely changed my body and it really does take care of you the whole way. The program comes with a guide to show you exactly what exercises to do and when, and it comes with the nutrition guide which gives you a meal schedule and recipes. Its a great program and I highly recommend it!
As far as what to buy with the program I would suggest a yoga mat so your don’t slip and slide around and for floor exercises. The P90X Chin up bar if you have normal doorframe (unlike me, i wish i did) P90X resistance bands or your own free weights and don’t forget the recovery formula. I got all my stuff at this website:
http://www.extremebodyworkout.com/p90x-products.php
They will have everything I just mentioned plus the push up stands which I use everyday but you don’t absolutely have to have those if you don’t want to spend the extra money. They help me out though since I have bad wrists from working as a technician. Plus you get more range in the pushups for better results.
Good luck and I’m sure he’ll love the program it’s actually a lot of fun if you have the right attitude!
First day doing the classic version.
Just finished, body feels like jelly.
I got a short ego boost cuz I was keeping up in the first half, then my bubble burst after the second half. I did less than half the reps the second part.
Thought I was done I thought the ab ripper was later tonight WRONG! right after. I was still feeling a bit dizzy and nauseas at times I thought I wanted to vomit.
The Ab Ripper see ya later see you later. I started off strong then I spent most of the time lying down cuz I couldnt get up. I would do a few hear and there, but I was toast.
Im fighting the urge to fry up some eggs toast and bacon. and tgoughts of modifying versions of the program but changed my mind after i read your post about it being a system for a reason. 90 days right.
Thanks for this site. Hope I can stick this out.
90 days is enough time to hopefully get my body back in shape for my 37 birthday.
Tom, this site is great! I first saw this on a infomercial and was very skeptical about it but decided to do research and came across your blog. I must say I am convinced that this is a great program and am planning to purchase this in the next few days. My girlfriend and I will be going through this together and will be each other’s motivation in case one of use finds it too hard.
Have you seen the Iron Gym workout bar? It seems to be a pretty versatile piece of equipment that works as a pull up bar, push up bar and sit-up assistance. I’m either going to pick one of these up or a set of resistance bands.
Tom, man, you are one inspiring dude.
I found your site yesterday as I was doing some research before starting P90X today. Watched the rest of your videos today. Very well done and inspiring, thanks!
After doing chest and back this afternoon without much difficulty (except for those freakin diamond push-ups), I got down on my mat to do Ab Ripper X and just died about a minute into it. I just couldn’t lift my legs at all. I could do just about nothing, so I stopped the DVD and decided to give myself a few hours and come back to it (no freaking way I’m giving up).
Any advice? Were you able to just go into Ab Ripper after chest and Back?
Anyway, thanx a ton, man. Love the site and videos and everything else. You rock!
scottro
Love this website, i’m 16 and starting p90x the 12th.
this is really an inspiration, thanks for doing it.
Tom,
Dude, Love the site, I just finished my first day of P90X, the chest and back was killer. Your site is inspirational, and is going to help me complete this 90 day life changer. Thanks
ARC
Glad I can help, let me know if you have any questions over the next 90 days!
I started P90x Jan 12th, 2009 and my biggest concern is the
chest & back workout. Granted I am not in tip to shape and have about 20-30 lbs to loose, but it kicked my ass. I could even finish all of the push ups. My right tricep was on fire. I don’t know if it is just my body trying to get back use to working out again or what. I did the Plyometrics and shoulder & Arms and all of that was fine except my tricep again. I don’t know if I am just being a baby, but I just thought that it was two much push ups. I don’t know if it was do to nutrition, being a little out of shape or what. I did have a big ego at the begining and didn’t pace my self and I paid for it. I even did push ups on my knees just to finish it. It could be my old weight lifting habits. I did low reps high weights. Never low high reps. I am just checking to see if anybody else having these issues.
Hey Tom how are you. My wife & I were having our morning coffee together on this Saturday morning as usual. Flipping thru the channels on TV I stopped on Tony Horton’s P90X commercial and was glued to it. Staying up late all of us see these infomercials and just laugh. But this one was a little different to me. Tony Horton is a proven trainer. His techniques range from beginner to advanced which means there are no excuses. I live up in NY & was just out of town this w/e at a family party in GA. I noticed that my brother has this P90X system but not had a chance to talk to him about it. I immediately put a search on google and your link came up. It was very inspiring to me. I am 6′0″, 185 lbs and about to turn 39 this month and have always been very athletic, palying baseball, basketball and work out in the gym. I Find myself switching up routines to confuse and shock the muscles. I have always had an ok body but never what I always wanted, which is to be ripprd up. I can tell you that for some time now I have changed my philosophy in the gym. When I was young all of us are concerned about heavy weights. But as we get older that becomes history and we find ourselves looking for things which are more health oriented like repetitions and increasing stamina to help burn calories, lower cholesterol doing exercises such as treadmill, eliptical and so on. Also more pain as we get older including recovery time is longer. So to sum up I will be purchasing this P90X this w/e. My wife will be joining me on this 3 month journey of dedication, as hopefully we we will be ready for the summer of ‘09!!! I will check up on your site from time to time for a some inspiration. I mention this because I notice that on one video you guys were playing cards and drinking in the background which I can tell you my wife and I definitely do with family and friends!!! I already eat pretty healhty, at least most of the time and take supplements like vitamins, fish oil, flax seed oil as well as protien after working out.
Hi Eric,
Yeah P90X is no gimmicky program it’s the real deal. It works because it kicks your ass everyday!!!! Sometimes you have to splurge a little and we do like to party with our friends. But if you keep it in moderation I think it’s not straying from the program too bad
If you’re already in pretty good shape you’ll be really happy with what P90X can do for you!!! Good luck and if you ahve any questions or just want to stop in to share your thoughts I’ll be here pluggin away!
Jay,
I was in the same boat as you. If you check out my first week video, you’ll see I was on my knees to at the end of chest and back
Yup, you gotta pace yourself and don’t be a maniac or try to prove something to yourself. Don’t be afraid to scale back the weights a bit as you start into this thing, and don’t be afraid to modify if you have to. It’s all part of P90X, you just have to take your time and slowly up your performance as you go! In a few weeks you’ll start to notice that you’re doing a whole lot better.
great website…i am thinking of buying p90x, but i wanted to know if it is the same set of 12 workouts each week. for example, is the arm workout always the same, with the variation just being the different types of workouts from day to day?
Hey man, just wanted to leave a quick comment. This site as awesome. You’re doing a great job man! Keep it up. I just did Day 1 today, and it’s great reading someone else’s take on it too. I know you’re like 116 days ahead of me, but still good to read what you did on Day 1.
Your site was a bit part of my decision to get P90X and I’m so glad I did.
Thanks.

Your blog is great and the videos are phenomenal. Gives a detailed insight of an everyday guy doing the workouts. 1 question that I had for you - I’m expecting the P90X to arrive in about 5 days. I know you mentioned that the first week or so is killer. To avoid as much pain as possible, I’ve actually increased my current workout in order to get the soreness now - rather than later. Do you think this helps? Or am I F’ed either way?
Joe
Tom -
Great idea to put this site together. A couple of questions. I see that you’re currently on Day 133 or something - which partly answers my biggest question: What happens after 90 days? IS there a maintenance program? Are you left to make it up on your own after that point? Do you go back and start from the beginning? I’m pretty well convinced that this is the program I want to try - I just want to make sure there’s some sort of plan after the 90 days.
Also, there’s a 1 hour workout every single day, right?
Thanks for your help,
Jon
i just want to know if i jog everyday and dont eat any carbs and use p90x will i loose weight faster
Tom, how did you go about figuring out how much weight to use in your excercises and how many reps to do? I just got the P90X workout and am planning on starting it with my wife this week. I have 20 pound dumbbells at home and am wondering if those would work, or if I need to get some more. Also, how important is having a bar to do pullups? Do you think there is any way to get around doing the pullups, maybe substituting another excercise for them?
Thanks in advance for any help,
Ken
Tom
The wife and I just bought it, and wonder can you buy the recovery drink/supplements from GNC? I know probably not P90X stuff but a reasonable facsimile.
Cheers Ray
hey Tom,
I cannot even begin to tell you how much I enjoy this site! It is what inspired me to get the program. I start tomorrow! I see you have mentioned your love of coffee in the AM…same here. Would it be a fair trade 2-4 tablespoons of fat free half n half for one serving of dairy say 3oz of cheese?… I really really need creamer…LOL this is a tough one for me..
Thanks for any advice on this…although I fear I may just have to learn to love my coffee black…
Scheryl
Hey Tom,Great work on your site. I plan on using it for at least the next 90 days. I am in good shape right now but I am looking to totally confuse my muscles and this is a great way to torture them. Well I thought I was in much better shape than I am because the ABX killed me. My boys always said it is all for show. Wow. Anyone else have trouble? This kicked my ass to the point that I was nauseas. Look forward to day 2. Jared from Boston
HI Tom,
I started P90X 2 days ago and man…. I am beat to a pulp. My wife and I both are following the Classic workout and I tell you, we are in way worse shape than we thought.
The first day wasn’t so bad, I had to go down a little on the reps I set myself up for but it was OK, it was our first day. ABX killed me though. I thought we were done, and then ABX started… we were already tired and my form just went down. We finished the set (and my wife did better than I did with the abs) and I went to go take a shower. Now I know what you meant when you said you couldn’t reach your head! Man, my arms were tired, it was a labor to just wash my hair. The recovery was nice, no major pain, just the soreness of worked out muscles.
Plyometrics on the other hand! Sh… Again, it was ok for the first 20 minutes or so, then it started to burn, and burn and burn! My legs just turned into rubber and I could not lift off. I had to finish the hour doing all modified routines. Even then I struggled. How wrong I was to think I was in good shape. My wife did very well. She finished the set with me and looked a lot more composed than I did. I was puffing and coughing and cursing! Ha, it was funny!
I am looking forward to the next 88 days! I will post on and off. Thanks for the space.
